The art of Indigenous Australians is created by societies living in far-reaching isolation from Western culture, so its understanding depends on the cultural and geographical context. Myths and ceremonies permeate all human activities, where the image is only a complement to the whole, a commentary on a larger story or event. For this reason, these works should be explained like the Bible, icons, or medieval poetry.
However, it is difficult to understand Aboriginal art, both from the level of the specificity of cultural experience and because of the complex function that art plays in indigenous communities. Nevertheless - without memory - we can immerse ourselves in it, because the sacred residing there - beyond the core context - will almost instantly become close to us, and the aesthetic form will evoke associations with something we may already know.
