Rosemary Petyarre
She was born 1961 in the Utopia area, approximately 300 km northeast of Alice Springs. She paints Bush Yam - her paintings depict the leaves of this vegetable. The tubers of this plant are similar in taste to sweet potatoes and were an important source of food for Aborigines in this area. Nowadays, women and their children collect yams and perform ceremonies; they paint their bodies, dance and sing.
Rosemary experiments with different tones and colors in her painting. Linear brush strokes evoke the rhythmic movement of the leaves of this plant. This optical illusion and organic vibrations are achieved by bending certain segments of the leaves.
She is a respected person in her clan due to her traditional knowledge and artistic achievements. Rosemary's work is featured in many collections in Australia and internationally.
