Polly Kngale
Polly Kngale
Polly was born in the Utopia region, a place approximately 300 km northeast of Alice Springs. Like many artists from this region, she started painting batik (an Indonesian material dyeing technique) in the 1980s. She then began to depict her History of the Wild Plum on canvas.
During the summer, Alawarre women and their children gather wild plum fruit and perform ceremonies. They paint their bodies with Amweketa patterns, dance and sing.
Polly has developed a unique style that distinguishes her from other artists from this area. She was a colorist and her technique involved dipping her brush in several colors of paint. This evokes the impression of cyclical changes of the wild plum plant at different stages of development.
*
Her style is impressionistic and lyrical, layering many layers of colors.
She spoke little and reluctant English, and signed her works with a cross. Polly's paintings are included in many collections in Australia and around the world.
