Bessie Petyarre
(skin name also as Pitjara), b. 1971, is an artist from the Anmatyerre people of the Alhalkere country, which lies in the heart of the remote Utopia region of central Australia. This is where Bessie's Dreams are and where the wild yam potatoes, called Atnwelarr and Arlatyeye in her language, come from. She started painting in 2005.
Her mother Polly Ngale was one of Utopia's most respected and sought-after artists, and Bessie proudly carries on the tradition of spot painting. Until recently, her work mostly followed in her mother's footsteps, applying small or large dots representing pencil yam seeds. Her new paintings are inspired by three great artists - her father-in-law Kubbitji Kngwarreye, her aunt Emily Kame Kngwarreye and her mother Polly - depicting her country, Alhalkere, and all that comes with it.
